In 1889, William Halsted of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States designed and invented surgical gloves.

The earliest surgery at the time was not to avoid infection, but the surgical surgeon (later Johns Hopkins Dean William Halsted) designed for his beloved operating room nurse, Caroline Hampton.

Because of allergies to the mercury disinfectant mercury disinfectant used at the time, head nurse Caroline Hampton could not continue to help Dr. Halsted clinically and decided to resign. Not willing to lose the able nurse William Halsted, personally found the then rubber giant Goodyear, designed a hand-to-wrist close-fitting surgical gloves.
