How To Choose A Stethoscope?

Jun. 08, 2018

In the past, stethoscopes did not make much difference in the auscultation effects. Nowadays, there are many kinds of stethoscopes. Different levels of stethoscopes are not as obvious as they are when listening to normal sounds, but there is a big difference when listening to murmurs. In general, the higher the quality of a stethoscope, the greater its ability to discriminate and analyze noise, and the longer it takes to use it. A clinician should at least have a good quality Multi Function Stethoscope.

The size of the Single Head Stethoscope

The larger the contact surface between the auscultation head and the body, the better the sound picked up. However, the surface of the human body has an arc. If the chestpiece is too large, the head cannot be completely in contact with the human body. The sound can not only be picked up well, but also leaks out from the gap. Therefore, the size of the auscultation head should be based on clinical needs. At present, the diameter of stethoscope chestpieces is almost uniform between 45-50mm. Special pediatric chestpieces are generally 30mm in diameter and newborns are 18mm in diameter.

The material of the folded stethoscope

Materials play an important role in sound effects. Sounds are transmitted through the air or matter, and eventually they are converted into heat energy. The transmission of sound waves has almost no attenuation in heavy metals and tends to attenuate in light metals or plastics. Therefore, high-grade stethoscopes must use heavy metals such as stainless steel and titanium.
